NORAD Tracks Santa

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a United States and Canada bi-national organization charged with the mission of aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning in the defense of North America.

We also track Santa Claus every December 24 through our NORAD Tracks Santa program.

Since 1955, NORAD has used satellites, high-powered radar, jet fighters and special Santa cameras to track Santa Claus as he makes his journey around the world.

A Tradition Born by Accident!

NORAD has been tracking Santa since December 24, 1955 when a young boy accidently dialed the unlisted phone number of the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The boy was actually trying to call Santa, and dialed a misprinted phone number from a department store advertisement in the local newspaper.

The operations center director was quick to realize a mistake had been made, and assured the boy that NORAD would guarantee Santa a safe journey from the North Pole.

Thus a tradition was born that rolled over to NORAD when it was formed in 1958. Each year since, NORAD has dutifully reported Santa’s location on Dec. 24 to millions of children and families across the globe.

Tracking Santa Today

NORAD Tracks Santa (NTS) has grown tremendously over the years. Today through satellite systems, high-powered radar, jet fighters and our special Santa Cameras, NORAD Canadians and Americans track Santa Claus as he makes his journey around the world.

Millions of people worldwide track Santa with NORAD via our website, social media, mobile apps and the NTS Operations Center on Dec. 24.

The NTS website is available in 8 languages and offers family-friendly games, videos and information about Santa and NORAD starting every year on Dec. 1. People who have an OnStar subscription can also ask the operator to locate Santa.

NORAD has over 70 corporate and military partners who help bring NTS to the world for free. The NTS Operations Center has more than 1,500 volunteers in the help answer calls from all around the world.

We are honored that NORAD Tracks Santa has become part of so many families' holiday traditions. We take that responsibility very seriously, and work hard to ensure the program continues for years to come.
