September 22, 2017 -- After obtaining a degree in biology, becoming a mother, and spending many years in pharmaceutical sales, Val McAdoo is rekindling her love for acting. Although she did some modeling and acting in early adulthood, it wasn’t until she enrolled her daughters in a local acting school, The Actors Focus, when she found herself being drawn into the industry once again. Ken Jansen, president of The Actors Focus, said that Val came to class “like she shot out of the cannon.” He continued, “She has great comedic timing and can hold her own in scenes with more experienced actors.” It was in a workshop at The Actor’s Focus that she caught the eye of veteran producer, Suzanne DeLaurentiis, who was on location in Philadelphia shooting a pilot presentation of a new comedy, “High Steaks.”

McAdoo, at first impression, comes across very warm and bubbly and it surprised me to see how much passion and focus lay underneath her nurturing exterior. After talking to her longer, she revealed that she had come from a “not-so-easy background” and had to overcome many obstacles through to create the life she wanted and leave her past behind.  In fact, one of McAdoo’s favorite Stephen Crane quote speaks of her own optimistic nature: “She blossomed in a mud puddle.” It makes sense that her dream role would be one similar to Khaleesi on Game of Thrones… a woman that also pulled herself up with her own bootstraps, and went through a trying time before finding her own power. When asked why she loves acting, she stated, “It really comes down to feeling the emotions that make us human. Those are what connect us together.”

Where are you originally from?

I am originally from Glenside, PA. After I graduated from Gettysburg College in 1999, I lived in Baltimore for 7 years.  My husband and I moved back to the Philadelphia area in 2006.

What inspired you to be in the industry?

I was inspired to be in the industry by my best friend, Grace, who always pushed me to get back into acting.  She has always told me I had a natural talent and to just go for it!  When I attended a workshop at the Actor’s Focus and met Suzanne DeLaurentiis, I felt in my heart that it was my time to really explore this avenue.

What are some projects you have worked on?

I acted and modeled through high school, college, and early adulthood.

What have you currently working on?

I am currently working on learning everything I can about the industry.  I am taking an acting class.  I’m working on self-tapes.  I’m also watching acting coaches on youtube and reading books about the subject.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself as actress with experience in commercials as well as television and film.

How do you feel the industry is changing and how does it benefit you?

Even as a beginner in the industry, I can see that social media is changing the industry by allowing talent to be discovered in a whole new way.  I also feel that social media can facilitate connections between all players in the industry.
