July 29, 2016 -- Prairie Grass Cafe in Northbrook is putting an exotic spin on a cool summertime classic. Ice cream is always appealing to diners in the warmer months, but the Alphonso mango variety on the restaurant’s dessert menu has become a very hot commodity.

The ice cream ($7.50) is prepared using a purée made from the Indian-imported mangoes and mint grown in-house. Prairie Grass may be one of the few restaurants in the United States to feature Alphonso mangoes on their menu, given the difficulties associated with acquiring the rare fruit.

A ban on the importation of Alphonso mangoes to the United States was lifted in 2007. Once the mangoes became available, co-chef Sarah Stegner knew she had to include the sweet fruits on her menu.

“My husband [co-chef] Rohit Nambiar, is from India, and he loves the Alphonso mangoes,” Stegner said. “When we heard about the lifting of the ban, we knew we had to have these here. Prairie Grass Cafe is very much an American restaurant, but we have a little splash of India for him.”

After my conversation with Stegner, I had the opportunity to try the ice cream for myself. Served over a bowl of ice, the dessert tastes like a mango lassi — a popular Indian drink — in the form of traditional ice cream. The fresh mint leaves only added more flavor to the already powerful taste of the dessert.

The ice cream is gluten-free and made from sustainably sourced ingredients. Prairie Grass features the prominent dessert on its menu year-round.

Prairie Grass Cafe is open every day of the week with varying hours. For more information, go to or call (847) 205-4433.
